Join The 49 Haiku (Haikai) Chapbook Challenge!
Encore!

August 28th-Sept 3rd 2023

You asked for this one to come back, so we're delivering!  Welcome to the 49 Haiku (Haikai) Challenge! A 7 day challenge to write 7 Haiku (Haikai) a day for a total of 49 Haiku!

Note: We are calling it 49 Haiku but all types of Haikai will be accepted for this challenge. (Senryu, Zappai, etc...all 5-7-5 syllable form types.)

How Does It Work?

Step 1:
You register for the challenge.

Step 2:
For the duration of the challenge, you write 7 Haiku (Haikai) a day. The challenge is 7 days, so this should equal 49 Haiku.

Each day you will get a video for the challenge including prompts, examples and exercises to help with your challenge.

Step 3:
If you complete the challenge, you will have an opportunity to get the chapbook printed!

Participation:

Each day of the contest the participants will be emailed a prompt video for the day which will include haiku examples, word banks, prompts and exercises to help them write their 7 daily poems. They will also receive the How To Haikai Guide to 5-7-5 Forms of Japanese Poetry and the Basho Haiku Chapbook. (Downloadable materials will be sent the day before the challenge begins.) For the 7 days that week, the goal is to write 7 Haiku for a total of 49. (There is wiggle room if you do 6 one day and 8 the next day, as long as you have 49 by the end of the challenge!)

Printing

If the challenge is completed, the participant can inform us of the completion and then have the opportunity for Local Gems Press to print a chapbook for them--the finished chapbooks will be pocket-sized books, 4 by 6

Registration: Closes Saturday August 26th
Midnight EST (Or When Full)

Because of high demand, at this time we have to limit this challenge to the first 100 people who register. We will keep you updated with how many spots we have left, but we expect it to fill up quickly.

After you register you will get an email with the introductory video and texts on August 27th and an email with the daily videos every day of the challenge after that. (Be sure to check promotions and spam folders.)

Will you accept the challenge?
