Local Gems Poetry Press is a firm believer in poetry's power to change the world for the better. Much of the poetry we publish has to do with helping causes for the betterment of the Earth, the Spirit and Humankind. Quite a few of our books have helped raise funds and awareness for causes such as autism, breast cancer, women's issues and even relief for Hurricane Sandy.
The Perspectives Series
The Perspectives Series dealing with poetry concerning autism and other disabilities is the corner-stone of the poetic-activism line of Local Gems. Hundreds of copies of the perspectives books have sold around the world and helped to raise funds for autism organizations and bring together creative autistic communities.
Songs Of Sandy
Songs of Sandy was the poetry community's response to hurricane Sandy and told the experiences from one of the major areas the storm had hit. Not only does the book record the genuine emotions and feelings of the hurricane, but 100% of the sales of this book are donated to Sandy relief efforts.
Rays and Shadows
Written by Narges Rothermel, a breast-cancer survivor of over 30 years, Rays and Shadows tells a brave tale of someone who has experienced the journey through breast-cancer and came out on the other side to tell about it. The poetry in this volume is genuine, true, honest but never gets lost in the extremes of pity. The author has donated a portion of the sales of this book to the breast-cancer research program at Adelphi University.
Whispers and Shouts
An anthology of poetry by the women of Long Island, covering topics from all angles. In this volume you see the strength of the female gender living in a world where gender-roles are no longer clearly defined and yet women still suffer so many hardships. Not only has the book tour gathered physical donations of all sorts for women's shelters, but a portion of the profits from the sale of this book are donated to a women's shelter.
